Our Physicians

Our physicians specialize in managing a broad range of kidney diseases, hypertension (high blood pressure), kidney transplantation evaluation and aftercare, in addition to dialysis. Each one of our phsycians underwent extensive training in his/her field and is board certified in the subspecialty of nephrology by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Jose Almario, MD

Almario

Location(s): Baltimore Office

Dr. Almario attended medical school at the University of Santo Tomas in the Philippines. His internal medicine, residency, and nephrology fellowship were completed at the Makati Medical Center, Philippines. In order to work as a nephrologist in the United States, he completed another internal medicine residency at DC General Hospital and nephrology fellowship at Georgetown University Hospital. He has been practicing in Baltimore since 1995. He has particular interests in chronic kidney disease and hypertension. Dr. Almario is married and has four children. In his spare time, he enjoys gardening, running, and cycling.

Harpreet S. Bhutani, MD

Harpreet S. Bhutani

Dr. Bhutani was born and raised in India. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at SUNY Buffalo and went on to pursue fellowship training in Nephrology at Emory University in Atlanta, GA where he served as chief renal fellow. After completing his fellowship training he worked at the VAMC in Hampton, VA before moving to the Washington, DC area. He is married with two children, and enjoys motorcycles, traveling, and spending time with his family.

Joselito Cabacar, MD

Dr. Cabacar completed medical school at the University of the East Memorial Medical Center in the Philippines. He subsequently trained in Internal Medicine at New York Hospital Medical Center of Queens and completed fellowship training in Nephrology at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Newark. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology. He practices in all areas of nephrology, including transplant nephrology, and he has particular interst in peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis therapies. Dr. Cabacar is married with one daughter, and he enjoys playing tennis and golf, as well as cycling.

Ali Ghorbani, MD

Dr. Ghorbani attended the University of Maryland and completed medical school at Ross University. His medical internship and residency were performed at the Medical College of Pennsylvania and his nephrology fellowship was completed at the Albert Einstein Medical Center. His clinical areas of interest are chronic kidney disease and hypertension.

Mayurkumar M. Gohel, MD

Dr. Gohel grew up in India and came to the United States in 2007. He completed his residency from Jamaica Hospital Medical Center in New York and Geriatric fellowship at George Washington University from 2009-2013. He completed his Nephrology fellowship at Geisinger Medical Center in Pennsylvania from 2013-2015. His main research interests are in glomerulonephritis, kidney transplant, hypertension and kidney stones.

In his free time, Dr. Gohel enjoys playing cricket, going to the beach, tailoring work and spending time with his family. He is currently fluent in English, Hindi and Gujarati.

Violet Habwe, MD

Born and raised in Kenya, Dr. Habwe moved to the United States in 1972. She attended Longwood College in Virginia, graduating with honors in Biology, and then completed a Master’s degree in Micrbiology at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. She earned her MD degree in 1981 at Howard University in Washington, DC. She completed her Medical Residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan in 1984, and Nephrology Fellowship at George Washington University Medical Center in 1989. She remained on staff at George Washington University Medical Center until 1992, when she joined Washington Nephrology Associates. Her main clinical areas of interest are renal transplantation, dialysis, pregnancy in kidney disease, lupus nephritis, and polycystic kidney disease. She has been listed as a Top Doctor in Washingtonian magazine for over 10 years. She is involved in clinical research in patients with chronic kidney disease. Dr. Habwe is married with 2 children and enjoys tennis, biking, and travelling. She also volunteers in the DC area and on medical missions.

Adnan Hashmi, MD

Born and raised in Lahore, Pakistan, Dr. Hashmi completed medical school at Aga Khan University Medical College in Karachi, Pakistan. His internal medicine residency and nephrology fellowship were performed at the West Virginia University Hospitals in Morgantown, WV. Dr. Hashmi is married and has two children. In his spare time, he enjoys watching football and reading about history.

Zahid Iqbal, MD

Dr. Iqbal was born and raised in Pakistan, and graduated from Allama Iqbal Medical College in Lahore, Pakistan. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, NY, and then worked as a hospitalist at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, West Virginia for three years. He returned to New York City to pursue fellowship training in nephrology at New York Medical College before moving to the Washington, DC area. Hs is married with two children, and enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time with his family.

Mohammad Khan, MD

Dr. Khan was born and raised in Bangladesh. Dr. Khan graduated from Dhaka Medical College, Bangladesh. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the Medical College of Pennsylvania and fellowship in Nephrology at Hahnemann University, Philadelphia. He joined Washington Nephrology Associates in 1997, and strives to practice “healing as an art.” Dr. Khan lives in Northern Virginia with his wife and three sons. He enjoys gardening, running and travel.

Padmaja Kolachana, MD

Dr Kolachana recieved her MBBS degree from Andhra Medical College, India in 1992. She moved to Northern Virginia that same year, and has remained there ever since. She completed her internal medicine residency at Washington Hospital Center and worked as an internist for Kaiser Permanente before returning to Washington Hospital Center for nephrology fellowship in 2000. She joined Washington Nephrology Associates in 2005. Dr. Kolachana is married and has 2 daughters. She enjoys cooking, traveling, and astronomy.

Saeed Kronfli, MD

Born in Khartoum, Sudan, Dr. Kronfli graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Khartoum and worked for 2 years as a surgical resident before moving to the United States. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency at St. Barnabas Hospital in New York and his Nephrology Fellowship at the Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He joined Washington Nephrology Associates in 1991 and currently serves as its managing partner. He is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Nephrology, and is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. His clinical interests include glomerulonephritis and electrloyte disturbances. Dr. Kronfli is married with two daughters. He is an avid soccer and basketball fan and enjoys playing badminton and traveling.

Fahim Malik, MD

Dr. Malik grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland, and has joined WNA after working as a nephrologist at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center from 2011 to 2013.   Dr. Malik initially left Maryland in 1997 to attend the University of Toledo where he went on to graduate with Honors.  During college, he was accepted into the Seven-Year Program at the Medical College of Ohio where he finished medical school.  Later, he completed residency at the University of Arizona and then decided it was time to return back to the east coast for his fellowships.  In Boston, he completed his Nephrology and Transplant Nephrology Fellowships at Boston University and Massachusetts General Hospital, respectively. His main research interests are in glomerulonephritis and kidney transplantation. 

In his free time, Dr. Malik enjoys playing basketball , skiing, and learning foreign languages.  He is currently fluent in Spanish and Bengali.

Anup Manoharan, MD

Born and raised in southwestern Virginia, Dr. Manoharan graduated from Sri Ramachandra Medical College in Chennai, India in 2001. He completed his residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. He remained there as a hospitalist and later completed his fellowship in nephrology in 2007 at the same institution. Dr.Manoharan was an assistant professor at the Georgia Health Sciences University for four years prior to joining Washington Nephrology Associates in 2011. He has published articles on glomerular diseases and also helped with writing a book chapter. Dr. Manoharan is married and has one son. He enjoys computers, sports, traveling, and spending time with his family.

Jeremy Marcus, MD

Raised in Gaithersburg, MD, Dr. Marcus graduated with honors from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in 2001. His medical internship and residency were performed at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (Harvard Medical School) in Boston, where he also served as Chief Resident and Clinical Instructor of Medicine.Dr. Marcus completed his nephrology training at Tufts-New England Medical Center in 2004. He is board certified in internal medicine and nephrology, and is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. He is married with three children, and enjoys playing piano and cycling.

Jagdeep Obhrai, MD

Dr. Obhrai grew up in Oklahoma and still has roots there. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania (biochemistry/history) and went to Baylor College of Medicine in Houston for medical school. His internal medicine residency was done at University of Texas-Southwestern and nephrology fellowship at Yale. Afterward, he was on the staff at Brigham & Women’s Hospital-Harvard and Oregon Health & Sciences University.
Dr. Obhrai’s has published on inflammatory renal diseases such as transplantation and lupus. He has clinical research interests in the use of biological therapies (antibodies) and clinical effectiveness of renal care strategies. Jagdeep’s first conversation with a patient includes a discussion regarding goals of care, and he works with the patient to achieve those goals.

Tariq Rehman, MD

Dr. Rehman was born in Malaysia, to a Pakistani father, and Chinese-origin Malaysian mother. After spending first few years of his life in Malaysia, his family moved to Pakistan. He went to attend King Edward Medical College in Lahore. Following footsteps of his father, He decided to move to England. He worked in a hospital in Manchester, UK. In 2003 he moved to United States. This decision led him to pursue residency training in internal medicine at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. From there on, he worked towards two year fellowship training in kidney diseases (nephrology) at University of Vermont. In 2008 he joined the faculty at Joan C Edwards School of Medicine at Marshal University as Assistant Professor. This position gave him an opportunity to teach medical studentsand residents. Moreover, he was actively involved in translational research work leading to publications in peer reviewed journals.His desire for continued growth, and love for cultural diversity then brought him to Washington Nephrology Associates in 2013. He has experience in treating all aspects of kidney diseases with special interest in difficult to control hypertension and chronic kidney disease.Dr. Rehman enjoys bike riding, hiking, reading books, and exploring food from different ethnic backgrounds. He lives in Springfield with his wife and two hands-on boys.

Gail Seiken, MD

Dr. Seiken attended the University of Virginia and received her MD degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD. She received her postgraduate medical training at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and served in the military for 13 years. Her previous research was on the topic of acute renal failure. Dr. Seiken is married with 3 children and enjoys cooking, hockey, and golf.

Hassan Shahin, MD

Dr. Shahin completed medical internship, residency, and nephrology fellowship at the University of Iowa. During his training, he pursued research into optimizing arteriovenous access in dialysis patients. He is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Nephrology. He treats patients with a spectrum of kidney issues related to hypertension, diabetes, glomerular diseases, and pregnancy.

He has clinical interests in dialysis and is the medical advisor for FMC east division- DC, MD and Northern VA area. He is interested in health information technology and is a medical advisor for Acumen Physician Solutions. Dr. Shahin enjoys outdoor activities and traveling.


V. Bala Subramanian, MD

Born in New Delhi, India, Dr. Subramanian attended medical school in New Delhi and then pursued postgraduate clinical training in England as well as at Washington University in St. Louis, MO. He also received an MBA from Georgetown University. He has special interests in healthcare policy and health information systems. Dr. Subramanian lives in Northern Virginia with his wife and two children. In his spare time, he enjoys traveling, cooking and being with his children.


Wanda Yvette Willis FNP-CNN

Born and raised in Washington, DC. by an educator and a minister retired from the Library of Congress. I developed a deep appreciation for education that coupled with a fascination with science and medicine. Naturally, I chose to pursue a career in healthcare.
I graduated from Delaware State University with a Bachelor Degree in Science in 1985, a Bachelor of Nursing from Howard University in 1993, and a Master’s of Science in Nursing with concentration in Family Practice in 2004. Over the span of twenty-five years in healthcare I have held positions as a staff nurse in the Correctional Medicine Community, Public health, Long-term care, Occupational health, Medical surgery, and Dialysis (Acute and chronic). For the last six and a half years I have been employed as a Renal Nurse Practitioner. I joined the practice of Washington Nephrology Associates in 1993. My clinical interests are acute and chronic hemodialysis, research and patient education. I have been listed in the Who’s Who in American Nursing, and the Cambridge Who’s Who Registry of Executives and Professionals.I have one son in the United States Army. I am an identical twin. I enjoy travel, reading, music, volunteerism, and cultural events.
